Les Miserables Trailer

by Les Miserables Fan on August 16, 2012

Tom Hooper is bringing the awesome musical “Les Misérables” to the large cinema screen. The take on the movie is different than many stage productions brought to the screen and seems much grittier as a result. The actors end up looking much more drawn, tired, worn down and basically as dirty as you would expect from someone of the time.

This “Les Misérables” trailer starts to show what we will see come Christmas 2012. Anne Hathaway is at the center of the trailer signing a haunting version of I Dreamed a Dream. It makes you feel the sadness of her character quite starkly. It’s easy to see how this will have Oscar nomination written all over it.

The trailer takes us from Hathaway through the other stars in the movie including Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe. And we also see Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne and Samantha Barks along the way.

But the star of this Les Miserables Trailer is Hathaway with her downtrodden look and haunting song.

Enjoy the trailer.

I was fortunate enough to see the musical in D.C. in 1991…I loved it. I first saw the story in the 1935 version of Les Miserables (I think it was als marketed in the U.S. as “The Bishop’s Candlesticks” when it came out) when I was in grade school, and it left me awestruck with the power of the story.

If Victor Hugo were alive today, he’d be writing about the oppression of the 99% by the 1%, for sure…

What irony! Victor Hugo stated as a foreword of an early English translation, that his book was about prejudice. Discovering his literary intent, while reading, would require more depth than defining ones principles by propagandized slogans. All socialist revolutions have resulted in a new 1%, and many headless corps’. The new 1% oppressing the old 1% with a guillotine or a gulag death. Oppression will disappear when we cease defining and grouping anyone as the enemy.
ps Hugo, while setting his story during part of the French revolution, (the great war against the 1%) did not really take sides. Why? Because it wasn’t the point of the story.

Did you actually read the book? Perhaps you missed the cynicism of the students playing at revolution, using the poor rubes to fuel their own self-righteous image of themselves. Or the fact that the hero of the story was a man who rose from depredation, raised himself through faith in God to a prosperous position, only to be knocked down and, again, build himself back up to prosperity.

Looks great.. Read the book and saw it in London, twice.

But I notice Ann still has her teeth……If they really wanted to get gritty, they’d have shown Fontine missing the teeth she sold along with her hair…..

But the cast looks great!

First saw it onstage in San Diego (the touring company) many years ago and were mesmerized by it. We have the video of the Anniversary concert and love it. Can’t wait to see the movie. The cast looks fantastic! We’ll definitely want a copy when it becomes available.

I have read the English translation of Hugo’s masterpiece and seeen the musical twice on Broadway. A good movie cannot be as compelling as a good musical performed live (duh… that’s why movie tickets cost less), but this move has the potential to be very good!
